Last year Jennifer Pelikan applied for, was nominated, and ultimately received a full scholarship to the Learning to Weave program at the ANWG conference. Although two guild members were nominated, the overwhelming interest meant the final selection was made by lottery. Jennifer’s background is mainly in spinning, but she wanted to challenge herself by learning to weave. She’d purchased a Baby Wolf loom, although it had mostly remained unused. The program presented the perfect chance to dive in.

The course itself was rigorous. Participants received a comprehensive list of required materials, plus donated yarn they could both use during class and take home. Instructional resources on various weave structures were also provided. Interestingly, Jennifer found weaving itself to be the simplest part; the real difficulty lay in planning, dressing the loom, and fabric design. She openly shared her intimidation and acknowledged her fear of making mistakes. This struck a chord with many in the group, who laughed and agreed that the most challenging aspects are often hidden in the details.
Much like Cathy’s experience at ANWG, Jennifer sometimes felt overwhelmed, which made it hard to retain everything being taught. The diverse array of looms in the classroom sometimes added to the confusion – as there were options/differences that weren’t applicable for her. |
